One person was shot dead while two others sustained various degrees of injury when the Police engaged some suspected armed robbers in a gun-battle at Essuekyir, a suburb of Cape Coast on Thursday morning.
The deceased, a 38-year old woman, who was on board a taxi cab with her 47-year old husband, Aboagye Okyere, was hit by a stray bullet after they were caught up in the shoot-out.
The husband and a 15-year old school girl, who was standing by the road side, sustained gunshot wounds and are on admission at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital receiving treatment.
The body of the deceased had since been deposited at the same hospital.
Briefing the media on the incident, DCOP Paul Manly Awini, Central Regional Police Commander said the Police at Twifo Praso, while on patrol duties, had information that a BMW saloon car with registration number (GT 4523 J) was being used by some suspected armed robbers in an operation.
He said the Police pursued them and on reaching Ankaful junction, the robbers opened fire at the Police and the Police also fired back.
ASP Awuni said the vehicle of the robbers run into a ditch in the process and the Police was able to arrest two of them identified as Joesph Quansah, 36 years and Daniel Ewusi, 32 years, but one of them managed to escape with an AK47 riffle.
Later, seven live and five dead goats were found in the boot of the vehicle on inspection by the Police.
The case had been taken over by the CID headquarters in Accra for investigation.
