11 SHS Heads sacked …over illegal fees

The Ghana Education Service(GES)  is cracking the whip to ensure that no unapproved fees whatsoever is paid by students, especially first year students who are reporting to school this month.

So far Eleven (11) Headmasters and Headmistresses have been asked to step aside (interdicted) so that investigations can be conducted into their alleged misconduct – charging unapproved fees.

Seven heads of Senior High Schools in Ashanti Region and four others from other regions have been interdicted for charging unauthorized fees.

The heads in the Ashanti Region are Mrs Selina Anane Afoakwa of  Kumasi Girls SHS; Mr Nataniel Asamoah of Asanteman SHS; Mr Andrews Boateng of Kumasi Senior High Technical School; Mr Kwadwo Obeng-Appiah of Manso-Edubia SHS;Mr Daniel Boamah Duku of the Agric Nzema Community SHS; Ms Gladys Sarfowah of Nkawie Senior High Technical School; and Mr Ampong Ahmed Omar of Collins SHS

The rest are Mr. Afi Yaw Stephen of the Berekum Senior High School; Mr. Joseph Jilinjeh Abudu of Odomaseman Senior High School; Nadia Lartechoe Annan of the O’Reilly Senior High School and Patience Naki Mensah of the Ghana Senior High School.

The GES obtained prima facie evidence that these heads were collecting money for a variety of items such as house dues, books, calculators, the printing of slips and files, hymn books and admission.

The action of the GES has provoked debate, especially on social media. While some believe the GES is being high-handed, others have praised it for being proactive to prevent exploitation of the students and their parents.
