The number of people killed in January this year has risen to 197, as against the 180 killed in January 2018, representing a 9.4% increase.
The fatalities comprised 149 males and 48 females.
Data compiled by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) indicates that the number of pedestrians killed witnessed a 1.5% increase, rising from 65 in January 2018 to 66 last month.
253 Pedestrians injured
On the other hand, the number of pedestrians injured recorded a 22.2% decrease from 253 in January 2018 to 207 in January this year.
The data revealed that the total number of reported cases also dropped from 1,071 in January 2018 to 961 in January 2019, representing a 10.2% drop.
14.7% drop in commercial vehicles involved in road accidents
The number of commercial vehicles involved in road accidents in 2019 witnessed a 14.7% decrease from the 723 in January 2018 to 630 in January 2019.
These accidents claimed the lives of 78 people and injured 423 commuters.
The data showed that the number of private vehicles involved in accidents in January 2019 witnessed a 1.7% increase, rising from 715 in January 2018 to 728 within the same period this year.
Private vehicles accidents killed 77 people
The number of people killed in private vehicles accidents in January this year was 77 while 204 occupants sustained various degree of injury.
Higher number of private vehicles than commercial vehicles
The number of private vehicles involved in accidents is 15.5% higher than commercial vehicles.
6.6% decrease in motorcycle accidents
For motorcycles, the number involved in January this year was 315, a 6.6% decrease from the 336 recorded in January last year.
42 Killed in motorcycle accidents
Consequently, 42 motorcycle riders were killed while 181 were injured in January 2019.
6% drop in total number of vehicles involved in accidents
The data revealed that the total number of vehicles involved in road accidents also dropped from 1,774 in January 2018 to 1,673 in 2019, representing a 6% drop.
