2 Killed in Alavanyo-Dzogbefeme Shooting

Mr Ebenezer Doku, Volta Regional Police Commander has confirmed the death of two men in a crossfire shooting incident between some military men and the youth of Alavanyo Dzogbefeme on Sunday.

Mr Doku said the men who were yet to be identified were killed after the youth of the community allegedly opened fire on the military unprovoked, compelling the soldiers to return fire.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the military went to the community to “negotiate” with the chief to appeal to the youth to release a weapon they seized from a police officer they attacked hours earlier.

The Commander said before the negotiation started, the military men realised that the youth had cut electricity to the community and started shooting from bushes.

He said the exchange of fire resulted in the death of the two and injuring about eight persons.

Mr Doku said the youth earlier attacked a police operation team that was in the area after it picked intelligence of piled up arms in the community.

He said the youth encircled the team, hit one at the forehead and seized his weapon after his colleagues retreated.

The Commander said the team made a report to the Kpando Police, which informed the military about the incident and the need to help retrieve the weapon.

Meanwhile, the Regional Security Council has sent a high powered delegation to the area after an emergency meeting on Monday.
