A tragic accident occurred on the evening of Saturday, October 12, 2024, in East Legon, Accra, resulting in the deaths of 2 unidentified individuals and three others in critical condition.
Two vehicles, an Acura and a Jaguar, collided and subsequently caught fire and burnt beyond recognition.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) promptly responded to the scene to retrieve the charred bodies and the remains of the vehicles.
According to Assistant Division Officer I (ADO) Alex King Nartey, from the Public Affairs Department in the GNFS, “Two vehicles, an Acura and a Jaguar, collided and due to the collision it hit a wooden electric poll causing the wires from the electric poll to fall on the car, catching a fire”, he explained on TV3 News.
“Two ladies where burnt beyond recognition”, he reported.
However, firefighters encountered significant challenges due to limited logistics, complicating the removal of the victims. Videos shared on the GNFS Facebook page depict firefighters cutting through the burnt cars to extract the victims, with smoke still billowing from the wreckage.
Reports from the GNFS confirmed that the two vehicles were completely incinerated, leaving no identifiable remains. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, as investigators work to piece together the events leading up to the crash. Although the GNFS reported that four individuals perished in the fire, officials have not yet confirmed the identities of the victims.
As of the latest updates, GNFS personnel continued to work diligently at the scene, focusing on evacuating the deceased from the wrecked vehicles. The police are actively investigating the incident to determine the cause of the accident and to identify the victims.
