THERE WERE sad scenes at Onyina Nofo, a farming community in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region, on Monday, after a two-year-old boy and two others were burnt to death.
A tanker vehicle that was fully filled with fuel, which was passing through the town at top speed, overturned heavily and exploded after it got involved in an accident, leading to the sudden demise of the three people.
A Ford vehicle was, reportedly, wrongly parked in the road at Onyina Nofo township so the tanker vehicle, which had just initiated a sharp curve, rammed into the ford, sparking the fire which instantly killed the trio.
The dangerous inferno, according to eye witnesses report, spread very fast resulting in the death of the young boy, Nana Owusu, Mohammed Sumaila, the tanker driver and Habib Moro, the driver’s mate instantly.
According to credible reports, the blaze virtually spread through every corner of the small village, burning down at least 15 houses to render scores of people homeless. Fire fighters were called to douse the inferno.
Nana Agyeman Prempeh, the NADMO Boss and his team rushed to the town and assisted in conveying the dead bodies, which were charred, to a nearby mortuary in the area for preservation and autopsy.
The District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South West, Honourable Patrick Adusei, noted that the entire town became very dark after the huge explosion as the fire chased the people, who looked panicked then.
According to him, a number of people, including women and children, that lived in the 15 gutted houses, have become homeless so they were compelled to spend the night in churches, schools and a chief’s palace.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service were at the scene to bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is working to provide relief items for the victims.
