Hosts Senegal became champions of the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations after beating Ghana 3-1 in a penalty shootout following 120 minutes of football which ended 1-1 at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies on Sunday.
Ghana almost took the lead in the tenth minute when Habib Mohammed met a left-sided free-kick from Augustine Okrah, but his eight-yard header struck the post.
The two teams locked horns to see who would become the best footballing nation in West Africa but regulation time failed to produce any goals.
However, in extra time, the match came alive. Senegal took the lead in the 108th minute through Youssouph Badji but Ghana fought back to tie the match through Joseph Esso.
But the Stars were unlucky during the penalty shootouts as they missed two kicks, one of which by Justice Blay has got many wondering what he wanted to do – perhaps wanting to pull a Jorginho kick.
Ghana’s Shafiu Mumuni, however, walked away with the Golden Boot. The tournament goes to Nigeria in 2021.
