You may have taken vacations with your fiance before. And you definitely will go on couples’ getaways again. But after all the stress of wedding planning, you deserve a memorable honeymoon. Here’s what to do to make it an unforgettable trip.
Do something you’ve never done before:
For us, that was kayaking in the sea. The waves carried us a little further out than we would have liked (and the water sports guy almost took off in his speedboat to rescue us!), but it was fun and exciting. Speaking of fun and exciting, one other new experience we had on our honeymoon: We got it on in our private plunge pool. I definitely would’ve regretted not making the most of that amenity.
Order room service:
Paul and I weren’t planning to do this–our meals were included at our resort, but getting them delivered to your cottage cost extra–until I caught this awful 24-hour bug that made getting out of bed, let alone making the steep walk down the hill to the restaurant, nearly impossible. So we had our meal sent straight to the room, ate on our patio overlooking the sea, and were quite pleased.
Get other people to take pictures of you:
I hate to bother other vacationers to take our photo, so I usually resort to the outstretched self-pic method. Your honeymoon is one trip where you want your pictures to include all of your hubby’s head, so it’s time to get over your shyness of asking for favors. Resort staff members were very gracious about snapping shots of us on the beach and at dinner (like the one above), and they were our favorite pictures from the whole vacation.
Have a lot of sex:
I’m not convinced that wedding-night sex is a must. But sex is as essential to honeymoons as ceremonies are to weddings, in my book. You probably don’t need to be reminded to work in boatloads of boning, but I highly recommend it anyway. You may never be as blissful as you are on your honeymoon, so take advantage of your happy, relaxed state and get busy.
Eat and drink decadently:
I did this every night–after all, it wasn’t like I had a wedding dress to fit into anymore! But if your meals aren’t part of the hotel deal, make sure to squeeze in at least one crazy delicious and filling dinner during your stay. And if you’re in a tropical locale, by all means, order a fruity cocktail (or seven) that comes with an umbrella in it.
