SIX PEOPLE, including a pregnant woman and a student, have collapsed on Monday in Kumasi following a stampede at the Central Market here, reports say.
The incident occurred when scores of people, reportedly, wanted to move through a narrow path from the 18 Mu Area of the market to Dr. Mensah, another commercial hub in the Metropolis.
Some ‘Good Samaritans’ at the scene rushed the six people to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment.
Initial reports say two of the victims were resuscitated and discharged the same day, while the remaining four were admitted due to the severity of their situation.
The real cause of the stampede is yet to be established, but some of the traders in the area said they suspected that ongoing construction works at the Kumasi Kejetia Terminal site must have contributed to the incident.
According to them, the passage way for traders and pedestrians in the area became very narrow because part of the area was condoned off by the contractors.
Efforts to reach the contractors for their side of the story have proved futile.
