At least six persons have died with others sustaining various degrees of injury following an accident at Newmont Ghana’s Ahafo mine site.
The incident occurred on Saturday April 7, 2018.
Information available to Citi Business News indicates that the fatalities occurred when a reclaim tunnel roof collapsed on the workers who were engaged as part of the mining company’s Ahafo Mill Expansion project.
A statement from Newmont Ghana copied to Citi Business News also said that two of the injured were treated at the clinic and discharged.
According to the statement, “The workers were all contractor employees with Consar Limited, a construction services company.”
The Regional Senior Vice President of Newmont’s Africa Operations, Alwyn Pretorius, commenting on the development said, “The entire Newmont family is devastated by this tragic accident and our priority is to provide support to the families, friends and co-workers of the deceased.”
Meanwhile, Citi Business News understands that operations have been suspended and Newmont Ghana is notifying the families of the deceased.
Also, all other employees working in the area have been safely relocated and the scene of the accident has been secured.
The company however says the police are on site and the appropriate government and regulatory agencies have been notified, including the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission.
