Eight persons have been confirmed dead in an accident at Gomoa Dominase Junction on the Winneba-Accra highway in the Central Region on Saturday, March 3, 2018.
Five of them died on the spot while the three others died while on admission at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.
Twenty other passengers who sustained varying degrees of injury are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Overtaking
Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the driver of a Sprinter Benz Bus, with registration number GS 8702-12, overtook a vehicle ahead of him and unfortunately ran into the Hyundai H100 (with registration number GX 2894-17) whose occupants had attended a wedding ceremony at Kasoa and were heading towards Agona Swedru.
Chief Inspector Emmanuel Konadu of the Gomoa Dominase Police said the driver of a tipper truck that was following the Hyundai saw the Benz bus overtaking the Hyundai bus and quickly veered off its lane but the Hyundai driver did not see the approaching vehicle early enough, resulting in the head-on collision.
He said two of the passengers were initially trapped in the Hyundai vehicle and it took the intervention of officers from the Winneba station of the Ghana National Fire Service to rescue them from the mangled vehicle.
Chief Inspector Konadu stated that both the injured and the deceased were quickly rushed to the trauma and specialist hospital after which the road was cleared to ease traffic flow.
Minister visits
The Central Regional Minister, Mr Kwamena Duncan; the Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Mr John Bartholomew Ninson, and other officials, yesterday visited the accident scene and the injured at the hospital.
Briefing the minister’s entourage at the hospital, an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Kingsley D. Ampeh, said that 23 passengers were rushed to the health facility but unfortunately two of them died on Saturday evening and the other died on Sunday morning.
He said most of the remaining patients were in a stable condition.
Mr Duncan commended the staff of the hospital for their timely intervention which saved the accident victims.
He advised drivers against speeding and wrongful overtaking since they were a major cause of accidents on the highway.
