The Ghana Police Service last night detained the arrested Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as ‘Abronye DC’, who, the police say, would be arraigned before court this morning over allegations that he had said former President John Dramani Mahama was plotting to stage a coup.
Abronye personally walked to the police station after he was officially invited to explain his alleged talks about a supposed coup plot by the former President.
“Preliminary investigation has established that his claims against the former President are untrue and likely to occasion a breach of the peace.
“In view of this, he has been formally arrested and charged on two counts of Publication of false news and Offensive conduct conducive to the breaches of the peace.
“He has been detained and will be arraigned before the court tomorrow Wednesday 16th February, 2022”, a police statement signed by Deputy Superintendent Juliana Obeng yesterday noted.
The statement urged the “public to be circumspect in all their dealings including pronouncements since anyone who falls foul of the law will be taken through the due process of the law.”
Adorye Angry
Meanwhile, a leading member of the NPP, Hopeson Adorye, who was the parliamentary candidate for Kpone-Katamanso Constituency for the 2020 elections, was upset about the fact that his friend, Abronye DC was detained overnight.
“They invited him to be there by 4pm but he got there a few minutes to 1 PM and wrote his statement. He has been interrogated and charged for misconduct. Why then detain him? You say he would be sent to the courts the next day so why keep him overnight?
“There is a trend we should watch; there is a difference between a suspect who himself obeys a police invite and a suspect who gets arrested and sent to the police station.
Abronye himself walked to the station based on the invitation so if have charged him, let him go home and prepare for court tomorrow. Why detain him?” Mr. Adorye told the media
Hopeson Adoryea continued: “Is the Ghana Police Service looking for equalization? You cannot please everybody….Every offence is now billable and after taking his statement and filing everything for court, why still keep him?”
