The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed worry over the collapse of a ceiling of a shop at the Accra Mall yesterday.
In a twitter post, he said: “I am disturbed to hear of the incident at the Accra Mall. Let us all work together to improve our maintenance culture. Speedy recovery to the injured.”
Some parts of the ceiling of a yet-to-be identified shop at the Mall on Thursday crashed, falling on three (3) people injuring them in the process.
As at press time yesterday, Marketing Manager of Accra Mall, Denise Asare told journalists that 3 Nigerians were present when the ceiling fell.
She added that the three are receiving treatment at the Mall Clinic.
According to an eyewitness who was present during the accident, two persons were directly under the area that caved in.
“I came to shop inside the Mall. I saw the roof come down on a shop. There were two people inside the shop. When the roof came down, they were directly under it. Some people came around and helped the victims.
“From the way they were carried to the Mall Clinic, it looked like they had minor injuries” adding that Passersby had to flee the scene for safety in what was described as a life and death moment.
The incident took place around the Apple Shop area of the mall towards the food court at exactly 11:59am the eyewitness said.
Though reports indicate that managers of the mall have begun evacuating the area to assess the extent of the damage, the cause of the incident is yet to be disclosed.
However Denise Asare has stated that the mall will bounce back very soon and assured that things will be fine.
Police arrived at the scene to assist in shutting off the area for calm to be restored.
Officials of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) were also at the scene as at the time the publisher was leaving the Mall yesterday.
