The Ada West District Assembly last Friday, June 11, 2021, as part of the good initiative implemented by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and supported by President Akufo-Addo took part in the ‘Ghana Green Day’ project dubbed ‘Green Ghana: Let’s Go Planting Five Million Trees in One Day” by planting high amount of trees at many parts of the District.
Madam Akosua Fosua, Forest Range Manager, speaking at a ceremony held at the Bornikope basic school complex, underscored the need for Ghanaians to ensure that the ecosystem is kept in balance.
According to her, the significance of trees to human life cannot be downplayed adding that, humans breathe in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide, whereas plants use the carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and give out oxygen.
She noted that without oxygen, mankind would not survive saying “When the last tree dies, the last man dies”.
She said the planting of tree seedlings embarked upon by the Government is part of efforts to address the issue of climate change and desertification.
She said food security was also part of the tree planting programme, declaring that “even as we urbanize, we still need the ecosystem balance”.
She however cited increasing global temperatures, rising sea levels, droughts, desertification, erratic rainfalls, and its accompanying floods in towns and cities as some effects of climate change.
She, therefore, appealed to all Ghanaians to take the issue of tree planting very seriously as part of efforts to arrest climate change.
Nene Kwasi Fragbi Boni, Chief of the area on his part expressed excitement over the initiative and said, he is hopeful for a positive change on climate issues in ways of helping farmers in the district grow more products.
He lamented on how the effects on the dry season has affected the beautiful growth of products from the farmers and admonished the President for such great initiative to save the environment and everyone from future occurrences.
He promised on making sure the initiative from the President achieves its purpose, success in the district with inclusion from all resident members.
Initiated by the Forestry Commission (FC), the exercise is rallying Ghanaians to plant more trees to preserve and protect the country’s forest cover and the environment.
Initially announced as an audacious plan to get Ghanaians to plant five million seedlings in a single day, the huge response led officials to revise the figure to 10 million.
Though it was not simultaneously done, the exercise began as early as 6:30a.m. as the various personalities involved took delivery of their seedlings.
To ensure that the seedlings are nurtured to serve the purpose, the Forestry Commission has committed to setting up a dedicated desk to provide advice and technical support to persons who collect and plant seedlings.
According to the commission, a dedicated telephone line would be announced to ensure that the investment made in acquiring the over seven million seedlings for the project did not go waste.
