Adom TV, a subsidiary of the Multimedia Group Limited, owners of Asempa FM, Joy Fm, Nhyira FM among others have rendered an official apology to President Akufo-Addo for televising a secret video purporting that he was allegedly caught taking a bribe of $40,000.
A supposed video of President Akufo-Addo receiving a $40,000 a few days to the 2020 elections has gone viral on the internet. The media house however in one of it’s programme telecasted the video to viewers.
The station’s apology signed by Management said “it has now come to the attention of Management of Adom TV that the contents of the video as aired does not represent the full story as it understands, which was in fact, a video of the then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in October 2016 receiving a donation of GHc40,000.00 for his campaign”.
The statement further added, “Adom TV unreservedly apologises for any harm or embarrassment the video may have caused the President and admits that the publication was in error”.
Meanwhile the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has threatened to take legal action against any media houses that have televised the supposed video.
At a press conference in Accra, Deputy Campaign Manager for NPP, Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid said the incident happened in 2016 when a party supporter donated the funds to support the NPP campaign.
“It’s all over social media. Yesterday, they even dared to show it on a television station. We are coming after that television station. It is defamatory on the President of Ghana. It is unethical and unprofessional. You take old videos of campaign donation and distort it, seeking to make it look like a recent video, come on. Is the NDC too incompetent to fake a video correctly? You want to run a nation and can’t even fake things.”
“Listen to the narrative they attached to the video, that the president took a bribe of $40,000. This in 2016 was equivalent to GHS168,000. Really? And they think that people will believe? Let’s even escalate it to $40,000 at the current rate, that will give GHS230,000. It cannot even buy the engine of the Ford expedition that candidate Mahama took,” he added.
