Afoko Grills Witness In Court

Defense lawyers in the murder trial of Gregory Afoko, younger brother of suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – Paul Afoko, have commenced questioning of the sixth witness in the case.

Lawyer for Gregory Afoko have mounted a spirited defense over a charge of murder.

Osafo Boabeng, cross-examining Awafo Akelesiya, the witness, disagreed on the number of statements the witnesses gave to the Police during his arrest.

While the lawyer insists the witness gave three statements to the police, Awafo maintains otherwise.

He told the Accra Criminal High Court through a Frafra interpreter that he gave only two statements to the police.

He said his arrest on May 21, 2015 was not based on the murder of the late Adams Mahama, the NPP’s Upper East Regional Chairman but because he was having a drink with Afoko, Asabeke and Baba Touffic.

Awafo, in an answer to a question, said he gave his statement to the police in “broken English” but not in formal English.

The witness further disclosed that he was detained by the police for two days and released on the third day.

Gregory, 52, is in the dock over the alleged murder of Adams Mahama, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP.

The prosecution intends to call 13 witnesses in the trial.

Gegory has been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and murder of Adams Mahama in May 2015.

Meanwhile he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Adams Mahama died of extensive acid burns and shock lungs (acute respiratory distress syndrome), an autopsy report has indicated.
