Ahwiaa Turns Ghost Town
THE ATMOSPHERE at Ahwiaa, situated on the main Kumasi/Asante Mampong stretch, depicted that of a ghost town on Monday.
Most parts of the usually busy community were uncharacteristically quiet with some schools in the area also shutting down on the day.
Several residents of the town were afraid that they might get caught up in violent attacks and so they decided to stay at home.
Interestingly, any first-time visitor to the community might mistakenly think that the government had declared a public holiday in the town.
Saturday’s Clashes
Ahwiaa, a popular town in Kumasi, noted for the carving of wooden artifacts, was hit by a violent clash between two groups.
The two youth groups, who are domiciled in the town, openly traded punches, butchered each other and destroyed properties including cars.
But for the timely intervention of armed military/police team, the entire town could have been turned into chaos by the marauding groups.
Monday’s Holiday
Even though law and order had been restored in the town, most of the students in the area, strangely, decided to stay home on Monday.
Reports making rounds indicated that the teachers attended classes to teach but they could not do so because of poor attendance.
The teachers waited for some time, hoping that the students would come, but after hours of waiting and no appearance, they closed down the schools.
