The Ave-Dakpa Magistrate Court has convicted and fined an Aide to the District Chief Executive of Akatsi North, a total sum of GHc2,400 in a libel case filed against him by the New Patriotic Party’s Volta Regional Women’s Organizer, Akusika Nkansah.
Narrating the case to the court, the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Martin Quarshie said, on the 16th of this month [January], the NPP conducted their constituency elections to elect polling station executives. The complainant, Mrs. Aku-sika was assigned to preside over the exercise.
While at post-exercise, she said her attention was drawn to claims on social media that she wasn’t in the constituency.
In an attempt to discount the claims, the complainant’s secretary took a picture of her in a hotel room purportedly drafting an itinerary for the exercise in the company of others including her driver and the Constituency Youth organizer, and sent it some WhatsApp platforms.
Dr. Prince Amuzu’s Aide, who was seen spearheading the falsehoods upon seeing the picture of the complainant and the party youth organizer together, clandestinely copied it and further spread on other social media platforms including Facebook with an article that suggested the complainant and the youth organizer were into an amorous relationship.
Mrs. Nkansah averred that the publications by the 31-year-old man is a threat to her family as a responsible mother, and exposes her reputation to public ridicule considering her role as a senior member of the NPP in the region.
She subsequently reported the case to the police. The accused person at the court presided over by her Worship, Grace Osei, pleaded guilty to the offence and apologized.
He was thus fined an amount of GHc 2,400.
