SOME FACELESS people are said to be misinforming the public to drink more ‘Akpeteshie’, a locally brewed alcoholic beverage, to help boost their immune systems.
Those behind this false claim, are said to be claiming that the intake of Akepeteshie could boost the immune system of the drinker against COVID-19.
This false information is said to have encouraged more people, especially the naive youth, to start drinking Akpeteshie in large quantities, with the hope that it would offer them protection.
Charles Wereko, the Acting Director, Information Service Department (ISD), said his outfit learnt about the false Akpeteshie immune booster claims, during their COVID-19 public educations.
He said it is sad and unfortunate that a lot of people seemed to have fallen for and embraced this false claim. Mr. Wereko warned that those drinking Akpeteshie to protect them against COVID-19 should stop as they are rather weakening their immune system by the overdose of substance.
“There is no scientific proof that the drinking of Akpeteshie can protect people from being infected by the deadly Covid-19 but sadly people seems to have embraced this hoax”, he noted.
Mr. Wereko, who led a delegation on Monday to inspect how the anti-COVID-19 campaign in Kumasi was going, admonished the public not to resort to Akpeteshie to boost their immune system.
The Ag ISD Director said despite efforts by his outfit to educate the masses about the dangers of COVID-19, some people still do not believe that the virus exists, saying “we need to do more education”.
Osei Assibey Antwi, the Kumasi Mayor, on his part, said confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kumasi could have overwhelmed health workers but for the three weeks lockdown, ordered by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo
“The people of Kumasi are grateful to President Nana Akufo-Addo for his wisdom to lockdown Kumasi for three weeks, this is the reason Kumasi has not recorded more confirmed cases”, he said.
