President Nana Akufo-Addo, on Sunday posted on his Facebook wall, a congratulatory message to newly elected National Executive of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Sunday message posted on Facebook was after the Presient Akufo-Addo, had in person, returned to the Conference grounds early Sunday dawn to physically shake hands with members of the new team, verbally congratulate them and pose for photos.
Nana Akufo-Addo returned to the Conference grounds in the company of his Vice, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia to congratulate the new team.
Hours after that significant gesture, the President wrote on his Facebook wall:
“I congratulate warmly the new National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Stephen Ayesu Ntim, and the other National Officers who were elected at the Party’s National Delegates’ Conference, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, on Saturday, 16th July, 2022.
Once again, we, in the NPP, have demonstrated that we are the Party that is committed to the tenets of multi-party democracy.
“We have elected a team of Officers with a deep attachment to the timeless values and principles of the Party and its tradition, and who will steer affairs of the party for the next four years. They are the national face and voice of our Party, and they will set the tone and the pace of our election campaign in 2024.
“As I indicated on Saturday, the NPP is at its best when we are united and operating as a focused entity. I, thus, urge all in the NPP to unite strongly behind our new national officers, for it is only by working together that we can “Break the Eight”, and help deliver progress and prosperity to the Ghanaian people.
“The Electoral Commission is to be commended for conducting and supervising Saturday’s elections, and I thank the Media for providing extensive coverage of the proceedings.
“May God bless the New Patriotic Party and us all, and may God bless our homeland Ghana, and make her great and strong.”
President Akufo-Addo, in his address at the Conference, just before voting commenced, had urged his party faithful to vote for NPP leaders who they are convinced would work in unity to ensure an electoral victory for the party in the 2024 polls.
“It’s our historic duty to maintain the NPP in office under a new candidate and under a new leader,” Akufo-Addo told the delegates gathered at the Accra Sports Stadium.
“An important step towards that victory is the work we’re going to do today… Let’s make sure that we elect men and women who can hold us together and enable us to work together to be able to surmount our mantra breaking the eight.”
Nana Akufo-Addo added: “We shall break the eight in 2024.”
He also congratulated the party’s outgoing Chairman, Mr. Freddie Blay, for his dedication and role in the party’s victories in 2016 and 2020 general elections.
Nana Akufo-Addo noted that although Mr. Blay initially was not a member of the NPP, since joining the party he had worked so hard to, leading to the party to two national electoral victories
The former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in a virtual address beamed at the Conference, also called on delegates to elect national executives who can lead the party to regain the confidence of Ghanaians.
“Even as we meet to pick new crop of leaders to lead us forward… I want to appeal to all of us that let us from now select national executives committee of the party not on great talks but on careful examination,” Kufuor told the delegates.
“To find out the sort of leadership that will enable us regain the confidence of the people of Ghana and let us show true respect to the idea, the vision that true sovereignty is from the people,” John Kufuor said.
He continued: “when we do that then our definition of democracy will conform with the idea, eloquently expressed as government of, for and by the people, when we do that, I tell you most of them will rally with us and follow the party in terms of governance.”
