President Akufo-Addo has unveiled the architectural design of the national cathedral as part of activities to mark the 61st anniversary of the country.
The cathedral, a five thousand seater, would be heavily adorned with Christian and national symbols and serve as a national place of worship.
It would also have a music training school, offices and other state of the art facilities.
The unveiling took place yesterday, March 6, at the Accra International Conference Center.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by senior members of the clergy from several Christian denominations including Most Reverend Charles Palmer- Buckle Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church, Pastor Mensa Otabil from the International Central Gospel Church, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills of the Lighthouse Chapel, Bishop Matthew Addae-Mensah of the Gospel Light Ministries and a host of other renowned Christian-leaders.
Delivering his speech, President Akufo-Addo said the Cathedral when completed, would address a missing link in the nation’s architecture, and also provide space within which Christians, regardless of their denominations, could congregate and worship God.
He called on Ghanaians to support the project to make it a reality.
“I visited the Washington National Cathedral and I was reminded ones again of this truth. The challenge of building Ghana’s national cathedral therefore relates to the mobilization of our people in support of the project. The broad representation of Ghana Christian Community at this event shows the emergence of the National Coalition that will arise and build the cathedral to the Glory of God,” he stressed.
Renowned Ghanaian Architect, Mr. Daniel Adjei, is the main architect for the project.
Some of his iconic works includes the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington DC.
Eulogizing the works of the architect, President Akufo-Addo said “David Adjei’s design for the national cathedral not only defines our needs but it is one that we can only be proud of as Ghanaians.”
The President is recalled to have cut sod for the construction of the project during the countries 60th anniversary celebration last year.
The National Cathedral would be sited close to the State House in Accra.
