Four(4) years have passed since Ghana lost Jerry John Rawlings, and already, the absence of his leadership is deeply felt by the ordinary Ghanaian.
Martin A.B.K. Amidu’s tribute highlights how much Rawlings is missed, especially when considering the current state of the country. Amidu recalls Rawlings’ dedication to the people, from his role in the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) to being the first President of the Fourth Republic. Yet, he laments that the values of service and accountability Rawlings championed have been overshadowed by political greed.
“The 1992 Constitution you signed with your blood is now being raped by the very people who should protect it,” Amidu writes. The judiciary, once an independent pillar of Ghana’s democracy, is now tainted by political influence, a painful reminder of the country’s drift from Rawlings’ ideals.
The situation in Bawku, once a symbol of hope for peace under Rawlings, has worsened. “What you fought to resolve now spirals into chaos,” Amidu reflects, citing the rising death toll from violence in the region. Alongside this, Ghana’s political landscape has been corrupted, particularly within the NDC, the party Rawlings founded. “You would not recognize your party today,” Amidu says, criticizing the opportunists who have sidelined the very cadres who once upheld Rawlings’ vision.
Amidu also recalls Rawlings’ warnings about traitors, those who, despite once supporting him, now lead the NDC. Despite the party’s betrayal, Amidu believes Rawlings’ ideals are not lost. “Even in your absence, the spirit of the revolution lives on,” he writes, vowing to continue the fight for a transparent and accountable Ghana.
