Angry Parents Storm Police Station …Over KNUST Arrests

THERE WAS tension at the Tech Police Station in Kumasi as some angry parents of some eleven students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), who were under arrest, stormed the place on Saturday.

The parents strongly condemned the school authorities for ordering the arrest of their children, who were in school to study, on Friday.

They were therefore seen piling incessant pressure on the police officers at the Tech Police Station to

quickly release their children to them, arguing that they are students and not criminals so they don’t deserve to be in police cells.

Some of the parents were even heard raining insults and curses on the school authorities, who they accused of being heartless and very wicked.

Cause of Arrest

Authorities at the KNUST had banned ‘Morale’ at the University Hall, which was popularly known as ‘Katanga’ Hall, with immediate effect. During the ‘Morale’, students of the hall gather and sing songs and dance, especially on Friday evenings.

Some of the students of the ‘Katanga Hall’ were certainly not pleased with the order for the ‘Morale’ to be banned by school authorities and so they (students) staged a demonstration right in front of the ‘Katanga Hall’ on Friday evening.

Students Assaulted

The security men at the KNUST, allegedly, attacked the protesting students in a violent fashion and that resulted in one student sustaining severe head injuries. That student is still on admission at the KNUST Hospital, the paper learnt.

Eleven students were also beaten and later arrested by the KNUST security unit, who later on handed them over to the Tech Police, who also placed the students in police cells till the next morning.
