Ankaful Management Denies Discharging Patients

Management of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital has denied authorising a mass premature discharge of its mental patients in connection with a sit-down strike by nurses beginning today, Thursday, 23 November 2017.

Media reports earlier this week claimed the hospital’s management, at an emergency meeting held on Tuesday, 21 November, ordered the In-charges of the various wards to discharge as many patients as they could, so that the strike will not have much effect on the workforce.

But in a statement, the hospital’s management said no such directive was given to nurses.

“We wish to state that no such decision has been taken by management.

“Management has not met with any individual or group to inform them of any intention to discharge patients as a result of the intended strike action by nurses.

“Indeed, the Acting Deputy Director of Nursing Services met with the nurse In-charges on Tuesday, 21 November 2017 to remind them of their duties and responsibilities as nurse managers since they could not proceed on strike as all other nurses, in case there was the need,” the statement said.

The hospital’s management implored the psychiatric nurses group and the entire staff, to stay calm as their grievances are being addressed by the sector minister.

The nurses at the hospital began an indefinite sit-down strike today to demand the immediate removal of their Medical Director (MD) Dr Eugene Dordoye.

The nurses have leveled allegations of human rights abuse, conflict of interest and misappropriation of funds against Dr Dordoye.

The strike follows the expiration of a three-day ultimatum issued by the staff for the Health Ministry to sack the MD.
