Entertainment Journalist and pundit Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has expressed his surprise at Abeiku Santana’s questioning of the relevance of a streaming platform in 2024.
Abeiku Santana, while speaking at a meeting between former President John Dramani Mahama, hailed the decision to introduce a pay-per-view platform for creatives.
However, he condemned the move to partner with the private sector to produce a streaming platform for musicians.
To Abeiku Santana, even Nigeria, with its large population, does not have a state-supported streaming platform, so Ghana cannot have one, adding that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has launched several apps that have turned out to be a white elephant; hence, creatives must take the streaming app with a pinch of salt. But reacting to the position expressed by Abeiku Santana, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo expressed shock at the tangent his colleague decided to go, especially in 2024 when the streaming platforms are what is holding down the creative industry.
“Empress, I am surprised that Satana, with his pedigree, will question the relevance of a streaming platform in this time and age. How does anybody with that repute, with that understanding, question the relevance of a streaming platform? He also said it was a lie. Where are the lies that surround the streaming platform?” he said on United Showbiz.
He further indicated that, kumawood movie industry is lagging because it did not embrace technological advancement at its early stages.
“The man said there are lies surrounding the streaming platform. After that, he questioned the relevance of the streaming platform. When he was done, then he said when they come to power they will introduce a television station where people will have to pay momo to watch.
“Is Momo not digital? Let me take the bottom-up approach like John Dumelo. In 2024, I’m not saying a tv station is not the best but Empress you and I know that we’ve moved on. Once again they were applauding. The same Kumawood stars who were present there and applauding are aware that the albatross on their neck is the fact that they did not catch up with technological advancement.
He concluded, “Then somebody is standing and promising a television station when they know that Kumawood’s failure has been their failure to catch up with the technological advancement, and you’re clapping for him knowing that your industry, which is on its knees, is because you didn’t catch up with technological advancement.”
