‘Arsonists’ storm Kumasi – Two Fires In 24 Hours
SOME SUSPECTED arsonists are reported to have stormed Kumasi and torched the Asafo Market twice within 24 hours.
The runaway ‘arsonists’ started their operation on Saturday evening by burning the Post Office area of the market.
That inferno flattened several shops and destroyed valuable items, reported to be valued at several millions of Ghana Cedis.
It took fire fighters from the Ghana National Fire Service several hours to get access to the affected area due to the poor planning of the market. The fire was eventually doused, but not after the destruction of millions worth of properties.
Unfortunately, before the affected traders could overcome their shock, another bizarre fire outbreak occurred at another section of the market on Sunday.
This time, the intensity of the inferno was much greater as it gutted several shops and destroyed items including bags of rice, clothes and many other wares.
The Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, during a visit to the market, noted that he suspected that the fires could be the handiwork of arsonists.
He charged the security agencies to team up with the fire service so that those behind the fires would be smoked out.
