Scores of angry looking members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asante Mamong Constituency, in the Ashanti Region, have hit the streets over what they termed as lack of fairness in activities heralding the party’s parliamentary polls.
According to them, they have realized that the party leadership in the constituency and the Ashanti Region, led by Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka ‘Wontumi’, have an agenda to deny ex-MP for Asante Mampong, Addai Nimoh, nomination forms.
They stated that the action of the party leaders, especially Wontumi, does not augur well for the unity, peace and forward march of the ruling political party, hence their decision to hit the streets in their numbers on Wednesday to protest.
Kyei Baffuor, a known NPP member in Asante Mampong, who is a polling station member, speaking on behalf of the demonstrators, vowed that they would sustain the protests in the coming days until Wontumi and his like-minded individuals did the right thing.
Obviously brimming with rage, the NPP member, stated emphatically that the party leadership, whether in the constituency, in the region or national, cannot impose any candidate on the party members in the Asante Mampong constituency.
Kyei Baffuor therefore demanded that the party leadership should immediately make nomination forms available to any eligible NPP member in good standing so that the delegates would elect a suitable candidate to lead the party as MP.
“NPP is a democratic political party and we have always used the ballot box to elect our parliamentary and presidential candidates and I don’t know why they want to bend the rules to favour a certain candidate in Mampong now”, he said.
Kyei Baffuor said “Addai Nimoh is a prominent NPP member in good standing, who has been an elected MP for Asante Mampong twice and he even contested for the NPP presidential candidate position, therefore nobody can deny him party forms”.
He said Addai Nimoh performed far better as MP than the current sitting NPP MP for Asante Mampong, adding that “NPP members in the constituency have used our own cash to buy the nomination forms for Addai Nimoh to lead the party”.
Several NPP constituencies in the Ashanti Region have been on ‘fire’ lately, following reports that the party leadership was working to deny some party member’s nomination forms to contest in the forthcoming party MP elections.
