STARTING FROM today (Wednesday) anybody that will be found riding an unlicensed motorbike in the Ashanti Region will be arrested and sent to court.
Similar fate would befall people that would also be seen in charge of an unlicensed tricycle, popularly known as ‘Aboboyaa’ of ‘Pragia’ in the local parlance.
This is a directive of the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department MTTD has been tasked to ensure that it works.
Also, the MTTD is to arrest minors riding tricycles, riding without license, riding on the shoulder of the road, riding without helmet and riders jumping red lights.
It is also unlawful to ride in between lanes and creating additional illegal lanes, overloading of tricycles and taking passengers in the front seat of a tricycle, among others.
A press released signed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, said the directive seeks to help stop road crashes caused by tricycles and motorbikes.
“The Regional Security Council has observed with grave concern, the blatant way riders of tricycles and motorbikes flout traffic regulations on our roads with great impunity”.
Simon Osei Mensah said the nuisance caused by motors and tricycles on the roads often leads to “deaths and injuries to innocent citizens”, hence the new directive.
