Atletico, Galatasary Begin Champions League Campaigns With Wins

The Champions League resumed across various centers in Europe as teams began their journey to the Madrid in 2019.

Turkish Champions Galatasary got off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow in Istanbul.

Two of their strikers Garry Rodrigues and Eren Derdiyok scored in each half of the match to hand the Turkish side their first victory of the competition.

In the other Group D match played, Bundesliga side Schalke 04 played out a 1-1 draw against FC Porto at the Veltins-Arena.

Switzerland international Breel Embolo got the only goal for Schalke in the 64th minute while Porto equalized from a penalty through Otavia to take home a point for the Portuguese side.

In Group A, Atletico Madrid were 2-1 victors over Monaco in a keenly contested affair played at the Stade Louis II Stadium in France.

Samuel Grandsir put the home team ahead in the 18th minute after Atleti’s defence failed to clear their lines properly.

However, Diego Costa made amends for his earlier missed chance as he finished off a brilliant assist from Antoine Griezmann. Jose Gimennez’s touring header gave Diego Simeone’s men a priceless three points just before half time.

In the other Group A match, substitute Christian Pulisic celebrated his 20th birthday with the winning strike of the match five minutes from time as Dortmund overcame hard fighting FC Brugge.

Meanwhile, eagleee.com had earlier reported that Barcelona defeated PSV by 4-0 in their Champions League opener at Nou Camp.

Lionel Messi bagged a hat-trick and Ousmane Dembele registered his first goal in this season’s competition.
