The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly is one of the newly created municipal assemblies by the NPP government to create an avenue for rapid development.
Madam Sandra Owusu Ahenkorah was nominated by the President as MCE for the Municipality but was rejected by the Assembly Members on 26th July 2018 at Erata Hotel, East Legon.
There are 6 Electoral Areas in Ayawaso West Wuogon, namely Legon, Okponglo, East Legon, Airport – Roman Ridge, Ablemkpe and Dzorwulu.
Each of these Electoral Areas is represented by one Assembly Member with two Government Appointees. One Assemblyman is dead and has not been replaced.
Out of the seven Assembly Members, the nominated MCE got only one vote which is around 20% signifying a knock out.
However, rumours making the grounds at the Erata Hotel was that, the assembly member who was , “missing in action” had been threatened that his appointment would be revoked if he voted for the unpopular nominee.
There was total disappointment on the faces of the dignitaries who thronged the venue to watch proceedings; including Hon. Ashitey, the Greater Accra Minister, Hon. Ato Arthur, Head of Local Government Service, Hon. Osei Assibey, Mayor of Kumasi, Mr. Bekoe (Protozoa), an Aide to the Chief of Staff and hosts of Staffers from the Jubilee House.
Some of them vented their anger and disappointment at the Assembly members with some of them seen in exchanges of expletives with each other.
However the Party Executives, the NPP members, the local community and Chiefs were of the opinion that the Assembly Members did the right thing by rejecting the unpopular and unknown MCE nominee.
With this humiliating rejection of the nominee by the Assembly Members, it is expected that the President will nominate another candidate.
A lot of consultations and lobbying are expected to go on in the next few days to jostle for the position. Meantime, attempts are being made to renominate her by certain interested parties despite this humiliating rejection by the Assembly Members.
This is going to get very interesting as the choices that are made will definitely affect the development of the Municipality and the fortunes of the party.
We will keep the general public informed on the situation as it unfolds.
