THE BRONG Ahafo Region is currently leading in the production of maize in the country, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. George Oduro, has announced.
He described the development as very positive for the country in the sense that the abundance of maize would go a long way to enhance food security for the citizenry.
Speaking on radio in Kumasi, Hon. Oduro noted that maize production in the country enhanced significantly during the past year, and lauded government for the ‘good news’.
According to him, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration last year distributed improved seeds to farmers and expressed the optimism that the timely intervention was responsible for the high yield.
The deputy minister said available market had already been created by government, through the Buffer Stock System, to avert the perennial post-harvest losses.
He hinted that plans are far advanced to ensure an all-year-round cultivation of tomatoes, through the provision of solar pumps and irrigation systems to farmers, adding that, the importation of tomatoes from neighbouring countries, especially, Burkina Faso, could be a thing of the past within a short time.
