Barcelona has confirmed that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has undergone surgery following a significant injury – a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee.
This setback comes shortly after the German international faced heavy criticism for his underwhelming Champions League performance against Monaco.
The injury occurred during Barcelona’s 5-1 triumph over Villarreal, resulting in Ter Stegen being immediately hospitalised. While no official timeline for his recovery has been given, he is expected to be out for a considerable period, raising doubts about his availability for the remainder of the season.
Ter Stegen’s injury compounds Barcelona’s growing list of sidelined players, which already includes Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Fermin Lopez, Dani Olmo, Andreas Christensen, and Marc Bernal. The club’s injury crisis now leaves them significantly weakened across multiple positions.
Inaki Peña is likely to step in as the starting goalkeeper for Barcelona’s upcoming match against Getafe, but the club may explore the possibility of signing another goalkeeper to bolster their squad for the rest of the season.
Ter Stegen’s absence presents a serious challenge as Barcelona aims to maintain their form amidst an already difficult campaign.
