BAWKU PEACE: Akufo-Addo praises Mamprugu Overlord

President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed gratitude to the Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, for his crucial role in restoring peace to Bawku, located in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

During a visit to Nalerigu in the North East Region on Monday (14 October), Akufo-Addo commended the Nayiri for his efforts in conflict resolution, particularly in bringing calm to the troubled town of Bawku, which has been marred by chieftaincy disputes.

The president’s visit was part of a campaign tour to rally support for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

Akufo-Addo acknowledged the Nayiri’s long-standing contributions, stating, “I want to thank you very much, your confidence in supporting me all these eight years. Your help in maintaining the peace in Mamprugu, the North East Region of Ghana.”

“I am very happy about the contribution you have made to bring peace to Bawku,” he added, “and I agree with you. We have to find a peaceful way to ensure that peace is maintained.”

The president also referenced his previous appeal to the Nayiri in 2022, where he sought the traditional leader’s intervention in resolving the protracted Bawku conflict, which has claimed numerous lives.

In response, the Nayiri highlighted several developmental projects initiated by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government in the region.

He praised the administration’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which has significantly benefitted the youth in northern Ghana.

The Nayiri also lauded improvements in road infrastructure, citing key projects in Walewale, Gambaga, Nalerigu, and other areas.

“The North East Region has experienced remarkable growth under your leadership,” the Nayiri said.

“The road network has seen a tremendous improvement under your administration. Notably, projects include the construction of the town roads in Walewale, Gambaga and Nalerigu, and recently in Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.” – AsaaseNews
