Constructive dialogue and is a sure way to build a democracy and it is for this reason The New Publisher applauds the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for headlining the Government Townhall and Results Fair, held in the Ashanti regional capital of Kumasi yesterday.
The programme was more of an accountability session, where the Vice President took his time to tell and explain various government programmes and initiatives across the country since his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was sworn into office on January 7, 2017.
Though it was a subtle but strategic campaign for the ruling party, it is difficult to fault any government for finding time to explain to the people its achievements and work.
What we found particularly brilliant about the Government Townhall and Results Fair held yesterday was that the Vice President backed each of the professed achievements of his government with some data and figures that can be cross checked to prove its authenticity or otherwise.
He was even bold enough to call the bluff of critics of his government and dare them to counter and disprove his claims with any contradictory data and figures.
Beyond that, the ordinary everyday Ghanaian was invited to the ceremony and given an opportunity to ask questions.
This is the way to go.
You are elected into office based on a promise you made to the people. While in office, you find time to tell the people what exactly you have done, and you show the results cum achievements for all to see.
In instances where the achievements are not physical structures, you provide verifiable data to back the claim.
Critics or opposition parties then have the opportunity to disprove the claims by also providing some verifiable figures and data.
The electorate is then left to decide who to believe based on the information provided and the arguments raised.
This is a sure good way to build a growing democracy. It is a brilliant concept.
We are not oblivious of the fact that in the past, there had been similar open fora to explain what government has done and to open the floor for questions to be asked.
The ‘RESULTS FAIR’ addition is what makes this one unique and the way to go.
If you have worked and delivered on your mandate, gather the people and show what you have done. It is only then that the true length of the toad can be measured.
