The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag-bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to implement a nationwide housing policy if he assumes power.
Speaking to chiefs, clergy, and Muslim clerics at Dobonso in the SekyereAfram Plains of the Ashanti Region, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the initiative would cover all districts in Ghana.
“Accommodation and housing bring a lot of jobs. As part of our plans to address the housing deficit, we will construct housing units in every district. This initiative will not only provide affordable accommodation but also create thousands of jobs for artisans, laborers, and contractors,” Dr. Bawumia said.
“When you are building, masons are available, carpenters are there, electricians are there, plumbers are there, painters are there, so housing brings a lot of jobs. Countries like Singapore have done it. We are going to do a social as well as affordable housing scheme across all the districts. It is in our manifesto,” he assured.
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia revealed plans to prioritize locally made products through a ‘Ghana First Policy.’ He explained, “I am also going to introduce the ‘buy Ghana first’ policy. Today, when the government is purchasing items, we import them from outside, and that does not bring job opportunities in the country. If you want to buy school uniforms, don’t go and import them from outside. This is the policy I am introducing, and I know it will bring a lot of jobs into the country.”
The NPP flagbearer also appealed to the people of Dobonso to vote for him, promising significant infrastructure development in their constituency. Drawing a comparison with previous campaigns, he stated, “First, when the NDC is campaigning in SekyereAfram Plains, they say, ‘Your brother is John Mahama, so vote for him.’ Is that not what they say? In 2012, 2016, and 2020, it was like that. They thought the NPP would not elect a Northerner, but today I am also a Northerner, so vote for me.”
Dr. Bawumia stressed that these policies, alongside his leadership, would create jobs and transform the country.
Dr. Bawumia’s plan involves collaborating with the private sector and local assemblies to establish a sustainable framework for housing development.
The initiative is designed to benefit low-to-middle-income earners, who are most impacted by the housing deficit.
By constructing housing units at the district level, the project aims to generate jobs in the construction sector, energize local economies, and stimulate growth in industries like cement production and steel manufacturing.
