Black Stars Face Benin Tomorrow
All too soon, the 32nd AFCON tournament, dubbed Egypt 2019, has taken off, and the four-time continental winners, the Black Stars of Ghana, are slated to begin their campaign for a possible fifth win, as they face their Beninoise counterparts in a crucial encounter at the Ismail Sports Stadium tomorrow.
Even though the team’s two pre-tournament matches failed to yield a single goal, the Kwesi Appiah boys are confident that they will bang in the goals when they kick-start the tournament.
Tomorrow’s game comes with very high expectations from the 30 million soccer-loving fans back home, many of who see it as a must win encounter to brighten the team’s chances of ending its 37-year drought.
Looking at history, the lesser-known Cotonou boys may be the underdogs in tomorrow’s encounter, but they also have a psychological advantage considering the fact that, for the first time in many years, Ghana was not seeded in the fixtures, and are thus not being seen as an invincible force on the continent today.
Per the fixtures, Ghana will take on defending champions, Cameroon in her second group game at the same venue in four days’ time, before taking on Guinea-Bissau at Suez at a later date.
THE NEW PUBLISHER wishes the Black Stars the best of luck in this campaign.
