Black Stars: Thomas Partey named vice captain to Andre Ayew
Atletico Madrid midfielder, Thomas Partey, has been named deputy captain for the Ghana national team, the Black Stars.
The 27 year old who has been linked with a move to English giants Arsenal replaces Kwadwo Asamoah, who was vice captain to Andre Ayew at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
Maritzburg United goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, meanwhile, has been named second vice captain.
The new appointments were contained in a statement by the Ghana Football Association.
”The Technical Team of the senior national team, the Black Stars upon a broad consultation has maintained Andre Ayew as Captain of the Black Stars. The Swansea City attacker who led Ghana to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, maintains his position as leader of the team despite changes at the technical realm of the senior national team.
”In a related development, Thomas Teye Partey of Atletico Madrid has been appointed as 1st Vice Captain while Richard Ofori steps in as 2nd Vice Captain.”
In June 2018, Partey excelled in an acting role as Black Stars captain for two international matches against Japan and Iceland.
Since making his debut in 2016, Partey has played 27 times for the national team, scoring 10 goals.
