BLOWS OVER OBUASI COVID-19 HOUSE

PLANS TO create an isolation center for COVID-19 patients at Obuasi, in the Ashanti Region, has sparked confusion.

A philanthropist resident in Obuasi, name withheld, is said to have dedicated his house at a suburb called Akapoliso to be used as isolation center as part of his personal efforts to help defeat the deadly virus in Obuasi.

But several residents of Akapoliso are said to have been angered about the decision, arguing that the center would put their lives in danger because persons who have tested positive for the virus would be brought there and their presence in the vicinity could help spread the virus and contaminate residents.

Some of the residents that spoke on radio, said they were aware the virus could spread through the air, hence their anxiety because by all means the persons who have tested positive and would be brought t to the area would breathe same air with residents who have not tested positive.

They said the house proposed for the isolation center is located right in the middle of the community so it is not conducive for such a purpose.

 DCE’s Response

Faustian Amissah, the Obuasi East District Chief Executive (DCE), has however expressed surprise at the  behaviour of the Akapoliso residents opposing the isolation center in the area.

According to her, reported cases of Covid-19 in Obuasi has been on the increase in recent times so the need for a new isolation center.

Faustina Amissah said, luckily, a certain man decided to help by dedicating his house at Akapoliso to be turned into Isolation center.

The Obuasi East DCE said on Nhyira FM that “we are in talks with them but if persuasion fails we shall use force and open the isolation center”.

Faustina Amissah said 90 new COVID-19 cases were recorded in Obuasi on Sunday alone, an indication that the virus was spreading fast.

She noted that authorities would not look on haplessly for the virus to get out of hand. Therefore, they would use force to open the isolation center.
