Bonzoh Pushes for Polyethylene Factory
Kwesi Bonzoh, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Ellembelle District in the Western Region says plans are afoot for the establishment of a multimillion dollar Polyethylene Plant at Esiama in the Region.
The project is estimated to provide direct employment to 200 persons and 1,000 indirect persons through other petrochemical opportunities.
The project set to be rolled out under the government’s flagship ‘One District One Factory’ (1D1F) programme, has seen a consortium of Ghanaian investors initiating plans in partnership with the Ghana Gas Company Limited for the take-off the project.
The current gas production of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant has about 6 to 10% of ethane, the main raw material for the plant.
The project developers and partners seek to roll out this groundbreaking industry for the rapid economic development and diversification of Ghana.
The Polyethylene plant will adopt a splitting decomposition technology which has the advantages of lowest unit cost, less investment and less pollution.
Opportunity
According to Bonzoh, the market for plastics and plastic related products keep growing and that it was high time the country delved into the opportunity.
While insisting the project has support from communities surrounding Esiama he disclosed that “Our preliminary discussions with key stakeholders makes the project a priority, because of the direct opportunity to off-take from Ghana Gas, creating immediate business and supporting value chain and multiply business opportunities in this strategic partnership project to create the needed jobs and opportunities for the youths and people of Ellembele and Ghana”.
The implementation of the initiative Mr. Bonzoh noted will allow the production of plastics and other finished products that arise from it, making the district a hub for the export of plastics and plastic products to other counties.
Local Content
In the view of the Ellembelle DCE, the project would help create jobs and add to government revenue mobilization while offering the opportunity to advance local content, economic diversification, and application of advanced technologies in the growing Oil and Gas industrial chain.
The creation of this allied industry of the Oil and Gas industry will be beneficial to the economy and also in line with the government’s industrialization plans boldly outlined under the 1D1F initiative.
