Godwin Avenorgbor, widely known as Big Godwin, has passed away.
A brief statement posted on the Facebook page of Ghana Television, where Mr. Avenorgbor had served as a broadcaster, announced, “The ‘Grandmaster’ (Godwin Avenorgbor) bows out. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
His death occurred on August 19, 2024, and the cause has not been immediately disclosed.
Until his passing, The Grandmaster, as he was affectionately known, held the position of Director of Communication for the Melcom Group of Companies.
Avenorgbor was renowned as an astute journalist and broadcaster, having anchored numerous programs on GBC. He is credited with pioneering morning shows on GBC’s platforms (radio and TV), which later became models for other media houses.
In a 2022 interview with GTV, he mentioned that he developed the framework for GBC’s morning shows after studying similar formats during visits to Atlanta, USA, and South Africa.
Following his broadcasting career, Avenorgbor transitioned to the role of Director of Communications for the Melcom Group. Recently, he had been appointed chairman of the planning committee for the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
Upon the announcement of Godwin Avenorgbor’s passing, Ghanaian netizens expressed their farewells and shared messages of condolence.
In a facebook post one netizen stated, “Life can be bizarre, just last week Thursday 16th August 2024 at the 75th Commemorative lecture of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at the La Palm Royal Beach I witnessed him sharing his experiences as a distinguish media icon and even indicated his readiness to write a book.
Also as the Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 75 celebration he commended all his members for the good job. During refreshment we shared the same table and he indicated how for 3 decades he was the voice for Club beer.
Big Godwin Avenorgbor you impacted many, you have paid your dues to the inky fraternity. RIP, Grandmaster. My deepest condolences to the family and the entire Ghanaian Media.”
