The Police in Brong-Ahafo on Monday, expressed grave concern over alleged instances of ritual killings in the region.
It appealed to the media to endeavour to crosscheck facts from the leadership of the Police on such reports before going to the press, in order not to create fear and panic in the society.
Interacting with the Brong-Ahafo Regional Executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) at a meeting in Sunyani, Chief Superintendent Nana Kwaku Duah, the Regional Crime Officer, said “Brong-Ahafo remains the safest region in the county”.
He said, the Police in the region would continue to put in place measures that would discourage crime and ensure that citizens live in safe neighbourhood everywhere.
Chief Supt Duah said the command could strongly boast that in the past one-year not a single ritual murder had been reported in the region.
“All the alleged reports of ritual killings being circulated in some social and traditional media outlets in the region are based on suspicions”, he said.
Chief Supt Duah appealed to victims of attacks to report to the Police for investigations, instead of rushing to the media.
“The media is not the best platform to report matters concerning security”, he said, and called on particularly the electronic media to assist and direct suspected victims who come to them to the Police to support investigations.
Chief Supt Duah said with logistical support and enough staff from government, the incidence of armed robbery has drastically reduced, particularly on the Atebubu-Yeji highway and other parts of the region.
He commended the government for the support and its commitment in crime combat and appealed to the general public to also provide the Police with information on people with questionable characters.
Chief Supt Duah said general crime wave in the region had diminished, saying “we are firmly on the ground and I can confidently say that the Police have been able to reduce crime to the barest minimum”.
Larry Paa Kwesi Moses, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the GJA, said the Association is a key partner in crime fighting and national development.
He said the Association intends to organise in-service trainings for both members and non-members, to help enhance journalism standards in the region.
Mr Moses commended the Police for its relationship with the media in the region and expressed optimism that the relationship would be strengthened for mutual benefit.
