Bugri Goes Down!
The outspoken Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu has been defeated in dramatic regional elections.
The incumbent Bugri Naabu lost to Mohammed Bantima Samba after he polled 116 of the total votes cast.
The chairman-elect, a Business mogul, polled 312 of the 492 total valid votes cast to end the four-year reign of Mr. Naabu in the NPP in the region.
The NPP regional Chairman on Thursday on his return from a campaign tour in the region had what appeared to be a serious accident but survived with minor injuries.
On the day of the elections, the incumbent had the accident vehicle towed to the Aliu Mahama Stadium, venue for the regional elections, an action many claim was to dismiss assertions he had faked the accident to win sympathy votes.
However, Mr. Naabu who stormed the venue of the elections strapped in a bandage, pushed to the campaign ground on a wheelchair and almost struggling for words in his welcome address to the delegates, was booted out.
Meanwhile, Legal practitioner, Sule Sambian won the Secretary position while Alhaji Rashid COP, the immediate former Youth Organizer, also won the Regional Organizer position.
Iddrisu Sunday won the 1st Vice Chairman position while the Northern Regional Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), Felicia Tettey was elected 2nd Vice Chair.
A leading member of the NPP popular vigilante group, the Kandahar Boys, Mohammed Alhassan Ghana won the Youth Organizer position.
The delegates overwhelmingly voted Hajia Rahana Aziz as the Women’s Organizer and Alhaji Sibidow Alhassan Yakubu as the Regional Treasurer.
The incumbent Assistant Regional Secretary, Haruna Iddrisu retained his position while Sham-Una Ilyasu Mohammed also retained his position as the Nasara Coordinator for the region.
