“The Cathedral is a great idea. The location is perfect. The means of funding, not with public funds, is refreshing. The Cathedral must be built. The judges will be housed and even more decently” – Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, cousin to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said.
According to him, the idea of the cathedral and its location could not be more than the description perfect, revealing that the same enclave for the edifice, which has now become the subject of national debate, was clandestinely packaged for a private developer in 2016 to be used for building prestige homes.
Despite the stiff opposition to government’s plan to build a national Cathedral, it seems the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not back down on its decision.
The building of the Cathedral has caused an uproar in the country with many accusing government of having misplaced priorities as well as wasting the taxpayer’s money.
The Mission said it is satisfied with the building of the national edifice, but destroying already built buildings to make way for that is what they are against.
“Ghana needs schools, hospitals, and factories to create jobs for our youth, not a National Cathedral. Building a National Cathedral instead of schools for our children who are having classes under trees is just ridiculous and an insult to the intelligence of the black race”, Afrikania Mission in Ghana explained.
But in Facebook post, Mr Otchere-Darko said: “The Cathedral is a great idea. The location is perfect. The means of funding, not with public funds, is refreshing. The Cathedral must be built. The judges will be housed and even more decently.
According to him, he is completely taken aback by the public outcry about the project.
In a series of posts on social media, Gabby insisted nothing will stop government from constructing the cathedral.
