CAF awards Nigeria win over Libya

Africa’s football governing body, CAF, has ruled in favour of Nigeria following the abandonment of a scheduled 2025 AFCON qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya that was abandoned with Nigeria’s travelling contingent complaining about being left stranded in the North African nation.

The scheduled game was the second of a double header between Libya and Nigeria with Nigeria beating Libya 1-0 in the first game.

However, Libya complained that Nigeria rerouted their flight and left them stranded for a while and many believe Nigeria suffered from a retaliatory act by the Libyans.

After conducting its investigations, CAF declared Nigeria as the winner of the abandoned game on Saturday, October 26.

Nigeria got declared as winners via forfeit and the Super Eagles were also awarded a 3-0-win margin and Libya got slapped with $50,000 fine that is expected to be paid in 60 days.

“The Libyan Football Federation is found to have breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. The match No. 87, Libya v Nigeria, of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2025 (scheduled to be played on 15 October 2024 in Benghazi), is declared lost by forfeit by Libya (with a record of 3-0)” part of CAF ruling states.

It further added, “The Libya Football Federation is ordered to pay a fine of USD 50,000.  The fine is to be paid within 60 days of notification of the present decision. All other and further motions or prayers for relief are dismissed.”
