Cameroon To Host AFCON 2021

Cameroon accepted to host Afcon 2021 after CAF offered stripped them off the hosting rights for 2019 and offered that as the alternative.

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has announced that Cameroon will host the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Cameroon, initially scheduled as host of the 2019 AFCON, were stripped off the hosting rights in Accra on November 30, 2018 following a CAF Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting at Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel.

CAF President Ahmad Ahmad, in a letter to the Head of State of Cameroon, Paul Biya, proposed that they consider hosting AFCON 2021, an edition that was to be staged by Cote D’Voire.

The media has been swashed with reports that Ahmad took a unilateral decision without involving the ExCo, reports CAF termed as “a strong campaign of misinformation and defamation against the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), which tends to portray that the decisions made at the last Executive Committee meeting on 30 November 2018 in Accra (Ghana), didn’t follow the strict application of the rules and regulations.”

The football governing body in the continent on Saturday revealed that “CAF intends not to engage in such sterile debates and controversies that don’t reflect the reality,” before announcing that:

“CAF recalls that Cameroon has officially accepted to host the AFCON 2021 through an official letter addressed to CAF and signed by the Cameroonian Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya.”
