Former soccer star George M. Weah was sworn in as the 24th President of Liberia on Monday January 22, 2018 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in country’s capital Monrovia.
Mr. Weah took over from Africa’s first female President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the country’s first democratic transfer of power for more than 70 years and this brought a great sense of hope and happiness across the country.
The brief and colorful ceremony was witnessed by over 20 past and present African heads of state, dignitaries and diplomats from Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Gambia and other parts of the world.
George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah, 51, won more than 60% of the votes and beat incumbent Vice-President, Joseph Boakai, in a runoff election on December 26.
Former Chelsea soccer star Didier Drogba, Samuel Etoo, Tony Yeboah, Ghana Football Association President Kwasi Nyantekye, CAF officials and sports personalities from all over the world also attended the ceremony.
Ghana was fully represented at the historic event. Two former presidents JJ Rawlings and John Mahama and sitting President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo were present to support President elect Oppong Weah.
Some celebrities from Ghana including; Actress Jackie Appiah, her manager Samira Yakubu, actor John Dumelo, Socialite/Entrepreneur Confidence Haugen, Fred Nuamah, Van Vicker and others also graced the occasion.
