A traditional ruler in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his palace in Mujipe in the Tuluwe Traditional Area.
The Mujipewura was in his late 70s, palace elders told Asaase News.
His son, whose name has been withheld for security reasons, survived gunshot wounds in the incident. He is receiving treatment in a hospital.
Sources say the Mujipewura and his son were attacked on Thursday evening in what is suspected to be a renewed land dispute in the area over the past two years. The ownership of the disputed land is between the Kekpandewura and the deceased chief.
This will be the first case of land dispute to be addressed by the new Yagbonwura, Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale I, after his enskinment earlier this month.
The chairman of the Savannah Regional Security Council, who doubles as the Savannah Regional minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, said that security officials have been deployed to calm the tension in the area as steps are taken to resolve the matter.
