The Chief of Sefwi Elubo in the Western Region, Nana Anini Baffour and his brother Kwadwo Affi are currently being kept under lock and key after they were arrested by the Police last Friday for engaging in small scale illegal mining mostly known as galamsey.
“Investigation has so far discovered dug-out pits from the compound leading to the bedroom of the chief’s brother. Four other deep dug-out pits have also been uncovered by the Police in other houses in the same vicinity”, a Police statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi noted.
The Police statement noted further that investigations revealed that the Sefwi Elubo Chief, Nana Anini Baffour, his brother Kwadwo Affi and six other suspects are the main people behind the illegal mining activities in the town.
The six other suspects are on the run.
It said the two grabbed suspects were arrested following Police investigation of a video circulating on social media showing illegal mining activities in some compound houses of the town.
The statement gave an assurance to the public that there is a manhunt for the six suspects on the run and all persons involved in the illegal act would be made to face the law.
On the same issue of illegal mining, the Police, during the dawn of Friday September 9, arrested nine more suspects and retrieved three excavators and three pump action guns in another anti-galamsey operation in the Western Region.
