Cholera Outbreak Looms in Kumasi
THE POSSIBILITY of several people, including women and children, losing their lives through cholera outbreak in the coming days at the Dagomba Line, a densely-populated area in Kumasi, is very high.
This disheartening development could occur, following the weird decision of inhabitants to turn the area into a dumping site; THE PUBLISHER can tell.
Virtually all the drains at the place have been turned into dumping sites by the residents, most of who are squatters.
The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi, who has foreseen the looming health threat, has vowed to deal with the situation before it explodes into something else.
The Kumasi Mayor disclosed his intentions when he paid an impromptu visit to the Dagomba Line on Sunday afternoon.
One disgusting scene that welcomed the mayor was that of a 4-year old boy who was defecating in the open into a black polythene bag.
And as if to add insult into injury, the innocent kid, after attending to the nature’s call, confidently dumped the black polythene bag into the open drain.
Hon, Osei Assibey said the action of the little boy strongly suggested that the older people in the community, who should have known better, usually threw human excreta into the drainage and that the toddler seemed to have picked the habit from them.
He expressed deep concern about the situation and noted that there could be an outbreak of cholera and malaria in the area if the waste was not cleared in the coming days.
The Mayor also cautioned that the entire place would be flooded with the next rain and reiterated that the KMA would take an immediate action about the scary situation.
