CID Pockets GH¢10,000 Bribe… Sets Free Convicted Robbers
The Ashanti regional police command is investigating a case in which two hardened robbers, Frederick Asante, 28, and Emmanuel Kwame Nyanyeh, who were sentenced to ten and eleven years imprisonment, respectively, by the courts in Kumasi, are strangely walking freely in town.
The two dangerous bandits were sentenced for robbery but police Sgt. Kyei Mensah, a police CID, reportedly let them off the hook after allegedly collecting a GH 10,000 bribe from the parents of the two convicts.
The parents of the convicts, both police officers, have been identified as C/Inspector Kennedy Kwame Nyanteh and Inspector William Armah.
The police CID and the parents of the convicts are currently under arrest and are being investigated.
A press release signed by COP Ken Yeboah, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, stated that all the three officers have admitted to the crime.
He said the police, however, managed to re-arrest Emmanuel Kwame Nyanteh on Friday, February 2, this year, from his hideout but Frederick Asante is still at large.
The regional commander expressed worry about how a convicted person could be aided by a police CID to avoid going to prison, and disclosed that, following the worrying revelation, a team has been constituted to investigate all convicted cases in the region to establish whether or not the convicts are in prison.
